Stay Up To Date On Oral Cancer

July 15, 2015

Cancers can vary in size and scope while affecting different parts of the body. Over the last few years, we’ve seen an uptick in oral cancer cases. Why are numbers increasing? There have been many advancements in the dental industry combined with years of scientific research to combat the problem, yet it keeps popping up and in greater numbers. A healthy mouth can work wonders for your overall well-being. By keeping it as clean as possible, you reduce your risk for developing oral cancer. Dr. Mark Fried and his staff in Framingham, MA know how serious oral cancer can be, and offering services that help prevent the disease from forming is what he does best.

Oral Cancer 101

Oral cancer can show up in many different ways. Each symptom is different from the other, yet they all carry the disease. Much like cancer in other parts of your body, it’s prone to spreading. What may start out in the mouth may travel back to the throat. This isn’t good, especially considering this entire area helps you breathe, speak and eat. Early detection is vital. But, how do you know if you have it to begin with? There are several symptoms to keep an eye out for:

  • Swelling, lumps, and rough spots on lips, gums, and other areas inside your mouth.
  • Lesions that are velvety white, red, or a combination of both in color.
  • Random mouth bleeding
  • Unexplained numbness or pain in the neck, mouth or face.
  • Repetitive face, neck or mouth sores.
  • Problems swallowing or chewing
  • Rapid weight loss
  • Changes in denture fittings

Always keep a well-trained eye on your mouth. Any differences you notice or different feelings that have overtaken your senses should be forwarded on to us. The earlier we can get you in here to diagnose the problem, the better.
